The Maskwa Medical Centre is designed to address the region’s limited access to timely, coordinated healthcare by bringing general practitioners, specialists, mental health professionals, and allied health services together in one location. The three-storey, 100,000 sq. ft. facility will feature glulam columns and beams with GLT panel floors, creating the long spans and open layouts required for flexible clinical spaces. A teaching clinic operated by the University of Alberta and Northwestern Polytechnic will occupy the main floor and will have the capacity to train up to 20 medical residents each year. Construction began in May 2025, with the centre expected to open in early 2027.

The 385,000 sq. ft. Temerty Discovery Centre, a new addition to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), will bring together research and health laboratories, clinical trial facilities, academic and lecture spaces, offices, and a central atrium that connects the building’s programs. Designed by KPMB Architects, the seven-storey curvilinear building will be Canada’s largest hybrid mass timber public facility when completed. Its wood structure will store more than 2,280 tonnes of carbon, resulting in a significantly lower carbon footprint than comparable buildings constructed with conventional materials. The project is targeting LEED v4 Platinum certification and Tier 3 of the Toronto Green Standard. Construction began in 2024 and completion is scheduled for summer 2027.

Makwa Waakaa’igan, meaning “bear’s den” in Anishinaabemowin, will serve as the Indigenous Centre for Cultural Excellence at Algoma University. The building will be intentionally located on the site of the former Shingwauk Hall residential school, creating a place for visitors to learn about and engage with Indigenous history, culture, and knowledge. Designed to connect with the surrounding landscape, the building features an expansive green roof that curves down to meet the ground. The centre will include a hall for lectures and recitals, classrooms, offices, a greenhouse, a teaching kitchen, and exhibition space for ceremonies and cultural programming. When complete, it will also showcase the work of the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association and house the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre archives and the Aboriginal Healing Foundation Collection.

A five-storey, 105,000 sq. ft. mass timber barracks is under construction at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State. Designed and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Seattle District, the building will accommodate approximately 200 soldiers and represents the U.S. Department of Defense’s largest mass timber construction project to date. The structure uses a hybrid system incorporating cross-laminated timber panels with other structural materials to meet the high seismic requirements in the region. Selected as part of the U.S. Army’s Mass Timber Pilot Program, the project will help evaluate the performance, cost, and environmental benefits of mass timber in military construction. Groundbreaking took place in December 2025, with the project expected to inform future Department of Defense building standards. 

Shigeru Ban Architects has designed a major expansion to the hospital in Lviv, Ukraine’s largest medical facility, which has faced growing demand for care since the start of the war. The project will add a new surgical building with a total floor area of approximately 25,000 sq. m. The facility is planned to include departments for cardiac surgery, oncology, and organ transplantation, along with intensive care units. Designed using mass timber, the project will be one of the first buildings of its kind in Ukraine, reducing embodied carbon while supporting regional industry through the use of locally produced CLT structural components. Prefabricated timber elements will allow much of the building to be manufactured off site, minimizing on-site construction work. Completion is expected in December 2027.
