The fifth building at Vancouver’s Main Alley tech campus is under construction. M5, or Prototype, will replace the parking lot located at the intersection of Main Street and East 4th Avenue, which sits at the easternmost edge of the Mount Pleasant Industrial Area. M5 will be designed by Henriquez Partners Architects and will be the firm’s first case study for its net-zero lifecycle carbon prototype. The roughly 162,000-sf building will have a total of 210 rental units, but no parking spaces for cars, except for loading, visitor, and accessible spaces; however, there will be more than 340 bicycle parking spaces. The design will use CLT components that are prefabricated off-site, and incorporate a mass timber checkboard façade. M5 is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

Currently under construction, the Academic Wood Tower, which will stand at University of Toronto’s St. George Campus, will be the tallest academic wood tower in the world once completed. At just over 126,000 sf and standing 77 m tall, the tower will feature classroom, lab, and office spaces. After Patkau Architects completed a mass timber feasibility study, with positive results, the primary structural system will use engineered timber. The core, beams, and perimeter bracing will be glulam members (from 315 x 380 mm to 515 x 494 mm), and the floor decks will be 175-mm-thick glulam slabs. Timber will be sourced from across the country, specifically from Western Canada. Completion is set for 2026.

One Bridgeland Green, a 49,000-sf office building, will be the first-of-its-kindmass timber office building in the greater Houston area.Breaking ground in May this year, the officeis part of the Village Green, a 70-acre mixed-use development located atBridgelandCentral. Designed by Lake | Flato Architects, One Bridgeland Green will be constructed using CLT shear walls for its lateral system; these walls will be displayed in the elevator lobby and tenant spaces. The rest of the structure will comprise glulam frame supporting DLT decking. Other materials include low-carbon concrete and zinc cladding. One Bridgeland Green is expected to reduce yearly energy usage by 25%. It is set to open in summer 2025.

Living Landscape, a CLT building in Iceland’s capital, will transform a current landfill site. The26,000-m2mixed-use structure, designed byJakob+MacFarlane and T.ark, will become the “largest wooden building in Iceland” upon its completion, which is scheduled for 2026. The building will contain a mix of housing for students, seniors, and families; there will also be workspaces, daycare facilities, and local shops.The architecture firms areaiming for net-zero emissions, and, according to Jakob+MacFarlane, the CLT construction will reduce the embodied carbon of the external walls by about 80% compared to the typical concrete structure used in the country.
